The future of pearl farming lies in genetic selection, which can create faster growing oysters, resistance to diseases and production of higher quality pearls.

Pearl specialists use 7 value factors to grade and appraise pearls. These are: Nacre Quality, Luster, Surface Quality, Size, Shape, Origin and Color/Overtone Strength.

  1. 1. Saibo jelek. Pada prinsipnya kan organ transplant. Kalau donornya sudah sekarat/rusak/jelek pasti jelek. Pertanyaanya, apa parameter untuk saibo yang baik?
    Lalu perihal pemeliharaan, tiram sehat = pertumbuhan baik. Faktor apa nih?
    2. Budidaya mutiara sendiri sudah sustainable. Selesaikan problem 1 maka ini selesai.
    3. Grading kan sudah standard di mana. Warna, shape, lustre, imperfection.

Less about pearls and more about the oysters themselves: I remember a few years ago I was in Vietnam and went to a pearl farm.. they were describing their mortality of their oysters and it was astronomically high (at least compared to elsewhere!). It could have just been that farm, but having dead/dying oysters in the water can’t be good, especially if there’s other edible aquaculture facilities nearby. Love to know more about the oyster physiology and what is done to maintain the health and wellbeing of the oysters 🐚🐟
